What is Concrete Flatwork?

Flatwork is any horizontal concrete surface. That includes garage floors, shed slabs, workshop floors, equipment pads, basketball courts, RV pads, and more. If it is flat concrete that supports weight or provides a stable surface, it falls under flatwork.

These slabs need to be strong and level. Unlike decorative concrete where appearance is the priority, flatwork focuses on structural integrity and function. That does not mean it has to look bad. A well-finished concrete slab with clean edges and a smooth surface still looks professional. But the real work happens in the preparation and concrete specification.

Building Slabs That Last

A concrete slab is only as good as what is underneath it. We start every slab project by evaluating your soil and preparing the base properly. Soft or expansive soil gets removed and replaced. We bring in compacted gravel to create a stable base that will not settle over time.

Concrete thickness depends on what the slab will support. A storage shed might only need 4 inches of concrete. A garage where you park vehicles needs at least 4 to 6 inches. Heavy equipment or commercial applications might require even thicker slabs with reinforcement. Here is what goes into our flatwork projects:

  • Site excavation and soil evaluation
  • Compacted gravel base (typically 4 to 6 inches)
  • Vapor barrier to prevent moisture issues
  • Wire mesh or rebar reinforcement for strength
  • Proper concrete thickness for the application
  • Control joints to manage cracking
  • Quality finishing for a smooth, durable surface

Common Slab Applications

Garage Floors

Your garage floor takes a beating from vehicles, tools, spills, and temperature changes. We pour garage slabs thick enough to handle the load and finish them with a hard trowel for durability. We can also slope the floor slightly toward the door for drainage or add a broom finish for better traction.

Shed and Workshop Slabs

A level slab provides the perfect foundation for a storage shed, workshop, or accessory building. We make sure the slab is sized correctly for your structure with proper edge thickness to support the walls. This is also where we integrate foundation footings if your building requires them.

Equipment Pads and RV Parking

Heavy equipment like AC units, generators, or spa pads need stable concrete bases. RV parking areas need slabs strong enough to support the weight without cracking. We calculate the load requirements and build slabs with appropriate thickness and reinforcement. These can connect to your driveway or be standalone pads.
